Biography

Since the founding of the Berliner Philharmoniker, the orchestra has shared a unique affinity with the music of Johannes Brahms. This inspired the 2010 founding of the Brahms Ensemble Berlin, made up exclusively of string players from the Berliner Philharmoniker. The members of the ensemble feel closely connected to the Philharmoniker's sound culture, especially as it relates to the music of Johannes Brahms.

Naturally, Brahms’ lush and expressive chamber music forms the core of the ensemble’s repertoire. In addition to his sextets, quintets and quartets for strings, his works with piano (trios, quartets and quintet) and the clarinet quintet play an important role in the group’s programmes.

But the music of other composers also plays a key role in the ensemble's repertoire: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Robert Schumann and Mieczysław Weinberg. The Brahms Ensemble Berlin made its debut in April 2012 in the chamber concert series of the Berliner Philharmoniker, and has since performed successfully throughout Germany, including at the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden, as well as in Japan and Korea.
