Biography

Edicson Ruiz describes the double bass as his own personal instrument, perfect for expressing his dreams and emotions. He took his first lessons with Félix Petit in his native Caracas; later, in the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Orchestra Academy, he studied with Klaus Stoll and Janne Saksala. He was just 16 when he made his solo debut with the Simón Bolívar National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, having begun his orchestral career in 1996 as principal bass in Venezuela’s youth philharmonic orchestra. In 1999, he became a member of the Simón Bolívar orchestra, and he joined the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2003.

Ruiz has played in premieres of works by composers including Heinz Holliger, Arturo Panatleón, Paul Desenne, Efrain Oscher, György Kurtág and Blas Emilio Atehortúa. He takes part in a wide variety of chamber-music projects with, among others, Heinz Holliger and Friends and the Sociedad Filarmónica Madrid-Berlin. For recreation and inspiration Edicson Ruiz turns to nature, through which – as with playing the double bass – he finds that can reconnect with himself.
