Biography
The Australian Jonathon Ramsay was a permanent member of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic before taking over the position of principal trombonist with the Berlin Philharmonic as Christhard Gössling’s successor. Born and raised in Sydney, he studied at the conservatory in his home city with Scott Kinmont. At the age of 20, he became principal trombonist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed regularly with the symphony orchestras of Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.
In 2018, the musician was awarded a scholarship to the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, where he became a student of Olaf Ott. He completed his training at the academy in 2021 and played as a guest with orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Staatskapelle Berlin, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg until his first permanent position. Jonathon Ramsay won first prizes at the International Aeolus Wind Competition and the Concorso Internazionale “Città di Porcia” in 2019. In addition to orchestral duties, he is also active as a soloist and chamber musician, for example in the brass ensembles of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.
