Biography

Horn-playing runs in Yun Zeng's family. Both his father and his grandfather were professional horn-players. The soft, modulated sound has fascinated Yun Zeng since his early childhood. He received his first horn lessons at the age of six from his father, principal horn of the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra. A television broadcast of Schumann's Concert Piece for Four Horns with the Berliner Philharmoniker featuring Stefan Dohr and Georg Schreckenberger inspired him so much that from then on he dreamed of becoming part of this orchestra. As a 10-year-old, Yun Zeng stood in for a sick horn player in the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra and discovered how rewarding it is to play in an orchestra. “I realised that this is a dream job for me,” he explains.

In 2011, Yun Zeng went to Beijing to attend Quan Wen's class at the conservatory there.
In 2019/20, he studied at the Haute École de Musique de Genève with Bruno Schneider. He won several major international competitions, including first prize at the 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition and second place at the 70th ARD International Music Competition in 2021. In 2022, he became first principal horn of the Staatskapelle Berlin. From there he moved to the Berliner Philharmoniker in the same position in 2024/25. He has also performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including those of Guiyang, Shenzhen, Sichuan and Hangzhou. When he is not busy with music, Yun Zeng enjoys reading, hiking and cycling.
