How well can AI compose? Why does music hit us right in the heart? And can it perhaps cure Alzheimer’s? Orchestra members discussed these and many other fascinating questions with scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston. At the invitation of our Circle member Andreas Weigend, they were given a unique insight into the laboratories of one of the world’s leading research institutions.

First stop on the tour: the laboratory of Tod Machover, Professor of Music and Media and head of the Media Lab's ‘Opera of the Future’ group. | Picture: Luisa Aha

He is famous for his ‘hyperinstruments’, which enhance classical instruments with the help of artificial intelligence. | Picture: Luisa Aha

The Media Lab team is also investigating the medical effects of music, and developing instruments that can help in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. | Picture: Luisa Aha
