The Berliner Philharmoniker’s first concert in the legendary Carnegie Hall was on 1 March 1955 under Herbert von Karajan; since then, the orchestra has given 76 further concerts there. This year, the Berliners return for three evenings with Bruckner’s Fifth Symphony and works by Korngold, Dvořák and Rachmaninoff. Soloist is Vilde Frang. Read about our time in New York.

And it’s a wrap for our time in New York! Our third evening in Carnegie Hall felt magical to us, and the audience responded with overwhelming enthusiasm. Thank you, New York – we can’t wait to return!

Bruckner’s Fifth is a work that American audiences rarely hear as a rule. The enthusiasm was all the greater as the many details of this music could be heard crystal clear in the excellent acoustics of Carnegie Hall. The second evening in New York also ended with standing ovations.

On Saturday, the orchestra travels by train from the capital of Washington D.C. to the city of New York. The concert on Sunday is at 2 pm – a rather unusual time. This does not dampen the enthusiasm in the hall: soloist Vilde Frang is frenetically applauded for her account of Korngold’s Violin Concerto, and the rest of the programme seems as if it could have been written specifically for the legendary Stern Auditorium.
