More than two decades had passed since the Berliner Philharmoniker’s last performance at Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center. A lavish programme seemed in order: Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead, Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto and Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7. The audience responded with tumultuous applause and standing ovations – an auspicious beginning, not just for us, but also for our soloist Benjamin Beilman, who made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker. Beilman played Korngold’s Violin Concerto, stepping in at short notice for the indisposed Hilary Hahn.
