Two of Europe’s favourite ensembles share the concerts of this series: the the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Soprano Anna Prohaska and countertenor Iestyn Davies provide vocal fireworks and stylistic versatility. Antonello Manacorda conducts the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in works from the New World. Songs by Charles Ives, dubbed the “founding father of American music”, are juxtaposed with Antonín Dvořák's much-loved Symphony No. 9, composed in New York. The Mahler Chamber Orchestra’s second concert will be conducted by Raphaël Pichon, whose background in historically informed performance practice promises a fresh perspective on the emotional worlds of Romanticism with works by Wagner, Schubert, and Mendelssohn.
Conductor Robin Ticciati has said that he admires the "unbridled emotional intensity" and "deep wisdom" of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Watch out for both qualities in his concert featuring works by Handel and Mozart. Another concert features Beethoven’s piano concertos; pianist Sunwook Kim, acclaimed for the nuance and clarity of his thoughtful interpretations, is the soloist.
