Chamber music is about dialogue on an equal footing, and about developing a common artistic identity as a group. No wonder, then, that the members of the Berliner Philharmoniker are passionate about it. In this series, you are invited to join them in their explorations of the genre. Experience the musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker up close and personal, while discovering the endless variety of the chamber music repertoire.
The series kicks off with Mozart’s mellifluous Clarinet Quintet, one of the most beloved works of the genre. Beethoven's Septet, with its echoes of serenading entertainment set amidst breathtaking musical refinement. A concert of French music promises a feast of timbres, with Bruno Delepelaire, 1st Principal Cellist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, contributing his own work to the programme. There will be a rare opportunity to catch the Quintets for Piano and Winds by Mozart and Beethoven, performed by members of the Philharmoniker alongside Kit Armstrong, once praised by Alfred Brendel as the greatest musical talent he had ever encountered.
In addition to string quartets by Schumann and Korngold, the only major chamber music work by Anton Bruckner, whose 200th birthday is celebrated in 2024, is on the programme. The Philharmonic String Quartet performs his String Quintet together with Amihai Grosz.
In a special feature, each of the six concerts in the series will feature a work by Wolfgang Rihm, Composer in Residence for the Berliner Philharmoniker. Rihm’s reliance on subjective expression and his stylistic diversity set him apart from most of his contemporaries.
