Daniel Harding conducts Gustav Holst’s effective cycle The Planets, one of the most popular works of British music. There are also ambiguous works in this series. For example, the Ninth Symphony conducted by Kirill Petrenko echoes Gustav Mahler’s fascinatingly alienated Viennese dance music. Maurice Ravel was inspired in a similar way for his intoxicating piece La Valse, which Joanna Mallwitz programmed as the finale of her concerto. Vida Miknevičiūtė, who interprets a vocal scene by Wolfgang Rihm, and Augustin Hadelich, who plays Mendelssohn’s voluptuous violin concerto, have made a great impression in previous appearances with the Berliner Philharmoniker. Former Artist in Residence Pierre-Laurent Aimard also returns to the orchestra.
