Opera performances with chief conductor Kirill Petrenko are always among the highlights of the season. This is all the more true when a classic such as Puccini’s Madama Butterfly is on the programme: a perfect combination of drama, emotion and magnificent music. In two repertoire discoveries for piano and orchestra by Ferruccio Busoni and Alexander Scriabin, pianists Kirill Gerstein and Jean-Frédéric Neuburger take on the challenges of the solo parts. Powerful sounds characterise the roaring organ symphony by Camille Saint-Saëns – heard here with debutant Kazuki Yamada on the podium – as well as Bruckner’s Eighth, conducted by Andris Nelsons. Prokofiev’s Cello Concerto is an exciting rarity, performed by the internationally acclaimed cellist Alisa Weilerstein.
