Renate Werwigk has admired the Berliner Philharmoniker since her youth. The Berliner has always enjoyed cultural activities such as visiting libraries, cinemas and theatres. When the construction of the Wall threatened to shrink her world and curtail these activities, she attempted to escape to West Berlin – but was caught by the Stasi. She was punished by solitary confinement in the dreaded Hohenschönhausen Prison, but was later ransomed by West Germany. To mark the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Renate Werwigk shares her memories of this time with us and, best of all, of the happy conclusion: a joint visit to the Philharmonie with her friends and relatives from East Berlin for the “Fall of the Wall Concert”.
